Third  Sunday in Ordinary Time

“…rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength”.   (Nehemiah 8:2-10)

“Your words, Lord, are are Spirit and life.”  (Psalm 19)

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor.” (Luke1:1-4, 4:14 -21)

For the past week and a half, just about the whole world is focused on the devastating earthquake that hit Haiti---estimates of 100,000+ dead buried alive in and by crumbling buildings.  Thousands have come from all over the world to try and uncover the living and the dead and to help those who were left injured and without homes, food, and the basics. The rest of us are sending millions of dollars and millions and millions of prayers.  In natural disasters, we are ONE.  As you and I gather at Mass, we are more aware that Jesus gives Himself to us all.  For the moment, we know that living His way is the only way to live.  And, we know in our hearts, in our minds, that St. Theresa of Avila is right when she says: “Jesus has no body on earth but yours, no hands, no feet but yours.” Next week-end, we will take up another collection for Haiti .

It is true: we, on earth today, are the body, the hands, and the feet of the Lord Jesus. We are here to bring food and drink, health and joy to others---today to the people of Haiti , every day to the downtrodden.  Every day is “holy” to the Lord, your God----“rejoicing in the Lord must be your strength”.
